The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has solidified its position as a prominent electoral force in Bihar’s Seemanchal region, securing five seats in the 2025 Assembly Elections. The party successfully retained all constituencies it had won in 2020 and narrowly missed a sixth seat in Balrampur by just 389 votes.
With these results, AIMIM has become the sixth largest party in the new Assembly, overtaking both the CPI(ML) and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha. Notably, the AIMIM now has the highest number of Muslim MLAs among political parties in the state.
In Amour, AIMIM’s state president and main campaigner, Akhtarul Iman, achieved a decisive victory with 100,836 votes, defeating JD(U)’s Saba Zafar by a margin of 38,928 votes. Congress leader Abdul Jalil Mastan trailed in third with 52,791 votes. This seat is significant as it is the only one among AIMIM’s 2020 wins where the party was able to retain its original member, with the other four legislators having defected to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in 2022.
In Baisi, Ghulam Sarwar emerged victorious with 92,766 votes, defeating BJP’s Vinod Kumar by 27,251 votes. In Bahadurganj, Md Tauseef Alam garnered 87,315 votes, surpassing Congress’s Mohammed Masawar Alam by 28,726 votes. In Kochadhaman, Md Sarwar Alam won with 81,860 votes against RJD’s Mujahid Alam, achieving a margin of 23,021 votes. Finally, in Jokihat, Mohammad Murshid Alam obtained 83,737 votes, defeating JD(U)’s Manzar Alam by 28,803 votes. This seat was particularly competitive, as former AIMIM MLA Shahnawaz Alam, who had defected to the RJD, secured fourth place.
The results underscore AIMIM’s continued grassroots support in Seemanchal, reaffirming its presence despite the previous defections. However, the party did face challenges in other constituencies. In Balrampur, spokesperson Mohammad Adil Hasan narrowly lost by under 400 votes to LJP(RV)’s Sangita Devi after a recount. Ghulam Hasnain in Thakurganj, Shams Aghaz in Kishanganj, Manzoor Alam in Araria, Md Shahnawaz Alam in Kasba, and Aftab Alam in Pranpur all finished third or lower in their respective contests.
Overall, AIMIM’s vote share increased from 1.3 percent in 2020 to nearly 2 percent in 2025. Despite the relatively modest number of seats won, AIMIM stands out with the highest number of Muslim MLAs in the state.
AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi, speaking to media at his residence in Hyderabad, called for the INDIA bloc to “introspect and explain the reasons behind its failure” to prevent the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) from regaining power in the state. He acknowledged the people’s mandate and extended his congratulations to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Owaisi reaffirmed AIMIM’s commitment to Bihar’s development, particularly in employment and public infrastructure. He underscored the ongoing demands for justice and development in Seemanchal, insisting, “We will not leave Seemanchal.” Owaisi has previously argued that RJD is not positioned to curb the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party, urging the Muslim community to become active political stakeholders rather than merely participants in electoral politics.
