At least nine people were killed and 29 others injured late Friday night following the detonation of a cache of confiscated explosives at the Nowgam police station in Srinagar. These explosives were previously recovered from an alleged terror module.
The explosion was so intense that it was reported to be heard from 30 kilometers away, setting the police station and nearby vehicles ablaze. Emergency services, including ambulances and fire tenders, were deployed to the scene shortly before midnight, as reported by the Indian Express.
Senior police and security officials arrived in Nowgam, located on the outskirts of Srinagar, and access to the area was restricted. Sources indicated that authorities are investigating whether the explosives detonated during an inspection, which was scheduled to be conducted with a magistrate present, alongside a Forensic Science Laboratory team that was on-site to collect samples.
The Nowgam police station is currently involved in investigations that recently uncovered an alleged interstate terror module linked to Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), a Pakistan-based group.
Unnamed sources told NDTV that the fatalities primarily included policemen and members of the forensic team who were examining the explosives at the time of the explosion. Additionally, two officials from the Srinagar administration lost their lives in the blast. With three individuals reported in critical condition, there is a possibility that the death toll may rise.
This catastrophic event comes just days after a deadly car explosion near New Delhi’s historic Red Fort, which resulted in at least 12 fatalities and has been characterized as a “terror” incident by officials.
Authorities stated that suspects connected to the Delhi blast are linked to JeM and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, a regional offshoot of JeM. Prior to the explosion in Nowgam, police had been investigating posters issued by JeM in the area, which threatened attacks on security personnel and “outsiders,” leading to the exposure of the alleged terror module.
