The Nifty India Defence index experienced a notable increase, rising by 113.20 points to reach 8,289.50, reflecting a gain of 1.38 percent during Friday’s trading session as the market neared its close. The sectoral index opened at 8,179.30, up from a previous close of 8,176.30, with 14 stocks advancing and only 4 declining.
Leading the gains was Paras Defence and Space Technologies, which surged by 6.64 percent to ₹766.50. Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) followed closely, climbing 6.26 percent to ₹1,612.90. Meanwhile, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) saw a rise of 5.46 percent to ₹2,900. Dynamatic Technologies and Zen Technologies also made significant gains of 5.28 percent and 4.93 percent, respectively.
BDL was particularly active in trading, recording a turnover of ₹1,393.47 crore with a volume of 86.42 lakh shares, making it the leader in both value and volume. GRSE and Data Patterns also had notable turnover figures at ₹961.88 crore and ₹723.55 crore, respectively. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) achieved the highest trading volume with 133.22 lakh shares, contributing ₹565.15 crore in value.
Overall, the sector reported a total trading volume of 433.61 lakh shares worth ₹5,896.69 crore. However, Midhani experienced a decline of 4.54 percent, along with Cyient DLM and Astra Microwave Products, which fell by 1.64 percent and 1.32 percent, respectively.
The defence index has shown robust performance historically, registering gains of 37.18 percent over the past year and 26.72 percent year-to-date, indicative of persistent investor interest in the sector.
