A video released by a former military guard depicts soldiers torturing two detainees at an infantry base in Myanmar’s Mandalay region in October 2021. Al Jazeera has obtained corroborating testimonies from military defectors, indicating that deaths in custody are prevalent. One defector, identified only as “AK,” alleged involvement in an extrajudicial killing operation approved by high-ranking officials. He recounted an incident in early 2024 in which four suspected fighters were severely tortured and subsequently shot by soldiers under orders to minimize noise. Though the men initially survived the shootings, they were executed multiple times. The bodies were later transferred to a military hospital, where doctors falsified death certificates to conceal the true cause of death. This systematic cover-up, described as organized and strategic by former military doctors, allows the regime to avoid accountability for such atrocities.
