As the conflict continues in Gaza, authorities are facing significant challenges in identifying the remains of Palestinians who have died due to Israeli bombardments or while incarcerated in Israeli facilities. Recently, Gaza’s health authorities interred 38 unidentified bodies in a designated area known as the “Cemetery for the Unknown.” On Monday, Israel transferred 15 additional remains to Gaza as part of an ongoing body exchange deal between Israel and Hamas. According to a medical source cited by the Wafa news agency, the Red Cross facilitated the delivery of these remains to the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis. This marked the 12th exchange under the ceasefire agreement, totaling 315 bodies returned to Gaza thus far; however, only 92 of these have been positively identified. The identification process is being severely hampered due to decomposition and a lack of adequate forensic resources. Reports indicate that many of these recovered remains show signs of torture. Furthermore, the Ministry of Health in Gaza has reported over 69,000 Palestinian deaths since the outbreak of hostilities, with many more individuals feared dead or missing under the rubble.
