SC Questions Hasin Jahan: Is Rs 4 Lakh Alimony Not Enough?

The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to renowned Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government regarding a petition from his ex-wife, Hasin Jahan. Jahan is seeking an increase in the monthly maintenance payments awarded to her and their daughter, currently set by a Calcutta High Court ruling from July 1, 2025, at Rs 1.5 lakh per month for herself and Rs 2.5 lakh for their daughter.

In her plea, Jahan argues that the financial support is inadequate, pointing to Shami’s substantial income and lavish lifestyle. During the Supreme Court proceedings, the bench queried Jahan about her demand, suggesting that the Rs 4 lakh total monthly support should suffice, and remarked that the previous court’s award is “quite handsome.”

The Supreme Court has directed both Shami and the West Bengal government to respond to the notice within four weeks, with the next hearing scheduled for December 2025.

Hasin Jahan’s counsel emphasized Shami’s significant earnings and assets, stating, “The husband earns a lot of money. Look at the affidavits—he has property worth hundreds of crores, luxury vehicles, frequent international travel, and a high-end lifestyle.” This incident further contributes to the ongoing legal conflict between Shami and Jahan, which has persisted since 2018, involving allegations of domestic abuse, dowry harassment, and financial disputes.
