Six women lost their lives on Wednesday morning after being struck by a speeding train while attempting to cross railway tracks at Chunar Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district.
Preliminary reports indicate that the tragedy occurred around 9:30 am when the Chopan–Prayagraj passenger train arrived at platform number 4. The women reportedly disembarked on the side opposite the main platform and, while crossing the tracks, were hit by the Netaji Express, which was traveling at high speed.
According to the Railway Police, the victims had traveled to Chunar to participate in a holy ritual in the Ganga river for Kartik Purnima. Chunar railway station is situated approximately 40 kilometers from the Mirzapur district headquarters.
The incident generated panic among nearby passengers, prompting immediate response from railway and local police personnel who initiated rescue and relief efforts. Senior officials arrived at the scene to oversee the situation and ensure the bodies were sent for post-mortem examinations.
In a subsequent statement, North East Central Railway clarified that Train No. 13309 (Chopan–Prayagraj Passenger) had arrived at platform number 4 at 9:15 am. The statement noted that some passengers, in a rush, exited onto the track side instead of the platform side, despite the presence of a foot overbridge. At that moment, Train No. 12311 (Netaji Express) was passing on the main line, resulting in the fatal incident involving the women.
The railway administration expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged passengers to disembark only on the platform side, warning against crossing railway tracks under any circumstances due to the inherent dangers.
Local reports also underscored ongoing infrastructure issues at Chunar railway station. Previously, passengers on platform number 4 had direct access to a foot overbridge leading to the main road. However, after the original bridge was removed and a new one constructed at a more distant location, travelers have been compelled to walk a longer distance to use it. Consequently, some have opted to skip the new bridge and instead disembark on the opposite side, crossing multiple tracks to reach their destination quickly—a dangerous choice that tragically resulted in Wednesday’s fatalities.
