Over the past year, the number of individuals in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention has surged by approximately 59 percent, increasing from around 37,395 in September 2024 to 59,762 last month. Deportations have also risen significantly, with reports indicating that 527,000 removals have been carried out since the beginning of President Trump’s second term. White House spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin noted in an October statement that the Trump Administration is poised to set historic records in this area. Additionally, California has been identified as a state where federal troop deployment may occur as part of the administration’s efforts to intensify deportation measures and enhance crime control. In June, 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines were dispatched to Los Angeles in response to protests against the administration’s immigration policies. Earlier this month, plans to send military forces to San Francisco were put on hold. Meanwhile, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santa Barbara has announced the suspension of this year’s Calenda Día de los Muertos, a traditional procession that typically features music, dance, and Oaxacan cuisine. Executive Director Dalia Garcia informed Al Jazeera that safety concerns, particularly regarding the event’s open street setting, influenced the decision to cancel the celebration.
