Equity benchmarks continued to face pressure in afternoon trading on Thursday, with the Sensex down by 452.19 points, or 0.53 percent, at 84,544.94. The Nifty slid 133.10 points, or 0.51 percent, to 25,920.80 by 12:45 PM. The indices opened lower and remained in negative territory, reflecting ongoing caution following the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policy announcement and comments by Chair Jerome Powell regarding future rate adjustments.

The Sensex opened at 84,750.90, compared to its previous close of 84,997.13, while the Nifty began at 25,984.40, down from 26,053.90. The market breadth was weak, with 2,176 stocks declining against 1,771 advances on the BSE, where 4,152 stocks were traded. A total of 134 stocks reached 52-week highs, while 45 posted 52-week lows. Additionally, 162 stocks hit the upper circuit and 132 the lower circuit.

Larsen & Toubro was the top gainer on the Nifty, increasing 1.14 percent to ₹4,003.40, followed by Coal India, which saw a rise of 1.09 percent to ₹386.15. Maruti Suzuki gained 0.70 percent to ₹16,251, while UltraTech Cement added 0.47 percent to ₹12,055. Jio Financial Services edged up 0.36 percent to ₹310.85.

On the downside, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories saw the largest decline, falling 3.86 percent to ₹1,202.60. HDFC Life dropped 2.13 percent to ₹745.10, and Bharti Airtel decreased by 1.73 percent to ₹2,064.30. Max Healthcare and Bajaj Finance both shed 1.38 percent, closing at ₹1,173.10 and ₹1,048.25, respectively.

Sectoral indices exhibited mixed results, with the Nifty Bank declining by 190.50 points, or 0.33 percent, to 58,183.20, and the Nifty Financial Services falling 146.95 points, or 0.53 percent, to 27,442.95. The Nifty Next 50 dropped 241.95 points, or 0.34 percent, to 69,990.15, while the Nifty Midcap 100 index slipped 60.10 points, or 0.10 percent, to 60,082.85.

Traders indicated that the market remained under pressure amid ongoing global uncertainties, with investors awaiting upcoming corporate earnings announcements scheduled for later in the week.
