AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi criticized both the ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc at a public rally on Wednesday, highlighting their long-standing neglect of the Seemanchal region in Bihar. He directed his remarks towards key political figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav, and the Congress leadership, questioning their commitment to the region often described as “the backward area of a backward state.”
“You made Narendra Modi the Prime Minister three times, but his heart is in Ahmedabad. You gave Nitish Kumar 20 years as Chief Minister, yet his focus is on Rajgir (Nalanda). Lalu and his wife Rabri Devi served as Chief Ministers for 15 years, while their son Tejashwi Prasad Yadav was Deputy Chief Minister twice, but their priorities remain limited. Where will the poor people of Seemanchal go?” Owaisi asked, emphasizing Seemanchal’s dire situation.
Owaisi highlighted the lack of development in Seemanchal, questioning what each political leader had done for the region. He noted that he travels approximately 1,500 kilometers from Hyderabad to advocate for the people of Seemanchal and their quest for justice. “For the last 11 years, AIMIM has never left you. We have experienced both success and failure, but we did not let success lead to pride,” he stated.
The AIMIM leader reminded the audience that his party secured five seats in Seemanchal during the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, asserting, “Seemanchal is not on the moon. It is part of Bihar.”
On Wednesday, Owaisi spoke in the Bahadurganj, Thakurganj, and Kishanganj constituencies. AIMIM is contesting 59 seats in the upcoming Bihar elections in alliance with Chandrashekhar Azad’s Azad Samaj Party (ASP) and Swami Prasad Maurya’s Apna Janata Party (AJP), fielding candidates in 30 constituencies.
Despite its political significance, Bihar remains one of India’s most underdeveloped states. Within this context, the Seemanchal region—which includes Kishanganj, Purnea, Araria, and Katihar—stands out as one of the most neglected areas.
As Bihar gears up for another election, residents in Seemanchal, especially within its Muslim-majority population, express deep frustration after decades of governmental indifference. According to the 2011 Census, Muslims constitute 17% of Bihar’s total population of 104 million, approximately 17 million individuals, with 28.3% residing in the Seemanchal region.
The area has consistently faced challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, high unemployment rates, poor quality education, and limited healthcare services. These issues have trapped residents in cycles of poverty and seasonal migration. Speaking with Maktoob, Seemanchal residents articulated their anger and despair over years of perceived political betrayal.
