Fears have escalated in Sudan following the capture of el-Fasher, a key city in Darfur, by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Reports indicate mass atrocities, including the killing of five Red Crescent volunteers in North Kordofan amid the escalating conflict. The RSF, reportedly the successors of the Janjaweed militias involved in previous genocidal actions, has seized control after an 18-month siege marked by severe deprivation and violence. El-Fasher’s fall has reignited memories of previous atrocities in the region, with videos circulating online purportedly showing RSF fighters committing executions and assaulting civilians. The United Nations has raised alarms about “ethnically motivated violations,” while pro-democracy groups have described the recent violence as the most severe since the conflict intensified in April 2023. With over 26,000 people having fled the city within two days, approximately 177,000 civilians remain trapped, facing severe shortages of food and medicine as the RSF has effectively sealed off escape routes. The ongoing conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and millions displaced, fueling a significant humanitarian crisis.
