Israeli occupation forces reportedly killed at least 63 people in Gaza overnight, including 24 children, according to medical sources, marking a significant escalation in violence that violates a US-brokered ceasefire.

This surge in violence occurred following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s order for “powerful” strikes in response to an exchange of gunfire in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza. The Israeli military confirmed the death of an Israeli soldier during this incident.

Hamas, the militant group in control of Gaza, has denied involvement in the attack in Rafah. The violence represents the most severe flare-up since a ceasefire, facilitated by former US President Donald Trump, was implemented on October 10 amidst ongoing conflict in the area.

The armed wing of Hamas, known as the Qassam Brigades, accused Israel of breaching the ceasefire and announced that it would delay the planned handover of the body of a missing captive. The group warned that further Israeli escalation could hinder ongoing efforts to recover the bodies of 13 remaining captives in Gaza.

In response to the escalating situation, President Trump addressed reporters during a flight from Japan to South Korea. He stated, “As I understand it, they took out an Israeli soldier,” and suggested that Israel was justified in its retaliatory actions. Trump emphasized, “Nothing is going to jeopardize” the ceasefire, asserting that Hamas is “a very small part of peace in the Middle East” and urging the group to behave responsibly.

This latest round of violence continues to escalate tensions in a conflict that has already caused significant human suffering in the region.
