Brij Lal, a BJP Rajya Sabha MP and former Uttar Pradesh DGP, has defended his controversial video wherein he stopped five sanitation workers in Lucknow’s Gomti Nagar Extension, accusing them of being “Bangladeshi infiltrators.” In the video shared on his Facebook page, Lal is seen questioning the workers about their identities as they stand with brooms. They claim to be from various villages in Assam, but Lal dismisses their responses, alleging they are actually from Bangladesh.

Lal asserted, “They claim to be from Assam, but they are all Bangladeshi. Bangladesh today speaks the language of Pakistan.” He further argued that allowing individuals he identifies as Bangladeshis to reside among citizens poses a security threat, likening the situation to “giving the ISI an opportunity to spread terrorism.” He urged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to facilitate their deportation, labeling them a “threat to the nation.”

Elaborating on his concerns, Lal commented on the visibility of these workers in the region, stating, “When I walk in the morning in Gomti Nagar detail, I find these Bangladeshis cleaning.” He condemned the Lucknow Municipal Corporation for employing them, claiming their presence overwhelms the area and implicates local authorities in exposing citizens to security risks.

The former IPS officer claimed that the presence of these individuals is linked to a broader security concern, stating, “These Bangladeshis living in Lucknow are a threat to the security and integrity of the country.” He cautioned that if not expelled, extremist groups could manipulate this demographic for nefarious purposes.

According to The Indian Express, the five men depicted in the video were daily wage workers hired for cleaning tasks during Diwali; each was reportedly earning ₹300 per day.

Critics swiftly responded to Lal’s comments. Congress corporator Mukesh Chauhan pointed out that Lal, during his tenure as DGP, had not previously identified any issues with Bangladeshi infiltration and criticized the current government’s claims as politically motivated. He noted, “This shows an intelligence failure both by Amit Shah at the Centre and CM Yogi Adityanath in the state.”

Academic Professor Apoorvanand accused Lal of perpetuating anti-Muslim sentiments, claiming that such remarks are part of an unsettling trend in which public figures brazenly harass minority communities.

Trinamool Congress spokesperson Riju Dutta condemned Lal’s rhetoric as “anti-Bengal” and “anti-Dalit,” asserting that it reflects the broader character of the BJP.

Brij Lal has a history of making controversial statements regarding Muslims and immigration, framing subgroups in a negative light and implying threats to national interests. His prior remarks include accusations against the Congress party for reallocating OBC reservations in Karnataka based on religious grounds and distinguishing Dalits from Muslims concerning social issues.

The incident continues to highlight ongoing tensions surrounding immigration and communal relations in India.
