On the streets of Istanbul, Turkey, a group of porters known as hamallar continue a traditional profession that dates back to the Ottoman era. These individuals, often seen hauling heavy sacks wrapped in white plastic or pushing handcarts, play a crucial role in the city’s bustling commercial heart, particularly in historic locations such as the Egyptian Bazaar, the Grand Bazaar, and the Eminonu district. The absence of modern amenities, such as elevators in many centuries-old hans and restrictions on vehicular traffic during the day, makes their work indispensable for transporting goods. Utilizing a semer, a traditional harness made of wood and leather, these porters can carry loads of up to 300 kilograms (660 pounds) to high levels within the commercial buildings. While the profession is largely male-dominated and often passed down through generations, it offers little job security or benefits, leaving many porters, including Omer Okan, who has spent three decades in the role, facing financial instability and a lack of societal recognition for their work.
