Tata Communications has successfully revived Nagan Thangal Lake in Upparapalayam village, Tamil Nadu, enhancing its water storage capacity from 2.6 million liters to 8.5 million liters, according to a recent assessment conducted by the Watershed Organisation Trust Centre for Resilience Studies.
As of 1:22 PM, Tata Communications Limited’s shares were trading at ₹1,864.20, falling by ₹51.10 or 2.67% on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
The Project Nanneer initiative, launched in 2022 in collaboration with Pitchandikulam Forest, has revitalized the previously neglected 15.01-acre lake. The effort now benefits nearly 12,000 people, with 60% of the participants hailing from marginalized communities. The restoration process involved desilting four acres to a depth of 1.5 meters and planting over 4,000 native species.
The W-CReS study noted substantial environmental advancements. Groundwater recharge has increased threefold to 8.5 million liters annually, while the area of water spread has expanded from 5.10 hectares to 15.19 hectares during pre-monsoon periods. Furthermore, barren land in the catchment area decreased by 15%, from 236.11 hectares to 199.39 hectares.
Once diminished by nearly 75% due to siltation and pollution, the lake now supports a rich biodiversity, including 14 fish species, 56 bird species, and 33 butterfly species. The site attracts over 11,500 annual visitors and hosts educational programs for around 650 students from 11 schools.
Mukul Kumar, Vice President of EOHS and Sustainability at Tata Communications, stated that the project exemplifies how restoration efforts, when aligned with catchment hydrology and community engagement, can lead to substantial, lasting impacts. The company aims to continue monitoring and engaging with the community to ensure long-term sustainability.
