Former Bhopal MP and BJP leader Pragya Singh Thakur recently sparked controversy with her comments urging parents to take extreme measures against their daughters if they visit the homes of non-Hindus. Speaking at a religious event in Bhopal earlier this month, Thakur suggested that parents should consider “breaking their legs” to enforce adherence to what she termed “Hindu values and discipline.”

The remarks, which have gained significant attention after being shared online, were met with swift condemnation from opposition parties, particularly the Congress. Critics accused the BJP of promoting a culture of “hatred and intolerance.” In the viral video, Thakur appears to advocate for severe parental control over daughters who stray from traditional norms, suggesting parents should not hesitate to discipline them harshly.

“Make your mind strong,” Thakur stated. “If your daughter does not listen to you and goes to a non-Hindu’s house, do not hesitate to consider breaking her legs.” She further justified her stance by asserting that those who punish their children do so out of care for their well-being and future.

Thakur continued, warning parents about “wayward” daughters who might disregard traditional values or contemplate leaving home. “Be more vigilant towards them. Stop them by any means—through scolding, explanation, or even beating—but do not let them step out of your homes,” she emphasized during her speech.

The backlash on social media has been intense, with many labeling her comments as regressive and perilous. The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding religious identities in India and raises questions about the intersection of culture, tradition, and personal freedom.
