The 34-year-old New York state assemblyman has rapidly moved from obscurity to become the presumed frontrunner in New York City’s upcoming mayoral race. His recent visibility includes appearances on the covers of major publications such as Time, New York, Vanity Fair, and The Nation. He has engaged in discussions with prominent newscasters on CNN and Fox News, as well as comedic exchanges with Stephen Colbert and the hosts of The View.

Mamdani’s rise to prominence is largely attributed to a robust social media strategy. One of his viral videos, a 2024 supercut featuring dialogues with Trump supporters from New York, set the foundation for a social media-driven campaign filled with entertaining clips. Examples include Very Cold Mamdani, in which he emerges from a polar plunge to advocate for rent control, and Red Rose Mamdani, a parody of The Bachelor aimed at promoting a fair future for New Yorkers. His TikTok presence, under the hashtag #ZaddyZohran, has gained substantial traction, reflecting his growing popularity.

However, Mamdani’s heightened visibility also brings challenges. President Trump has publicly criticized him, labeling him a “100% Communist lunatic” and warning of potential disruptions if Mamdani wins the election. This surge in notoriety has raised safety concerns, particularly after the assassination of far-right activist Charlie Kirk. Mamdani expressed that “I’m never alone now,” indicating the need for increased security.

Despite the risks, Mamdani remains committed to engaging with the public. After a brief interview at his campaign headquarters, accompanied by his security team, he interacted with New Yorkers on the streets of Manhattan. The response was overwhelming; within a short time, numerous passersby requested selfies and eagerly accepted campaign materials. The public often shouted his name in support, exemplifying his current status as an internet sensation.

The success of Mamdani’s campaign hinges on his ability to meet the expectations of his enthusiastic supporters, alongside his impressive volunteer network and prospective voters. As he embraces his role as a newfound public figure, he remains focused on the multitude of engagements ahead. After mingling with fans for a while, he and his team returned to their office, likely heading into the next scheduled interview.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
