Outrage Erupts Over Temporary Suspension of Akhilesh Yadav’s Facebook Page, Now Restored

The official Facebook page of Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav was suspended on Friday evening, prompting significant backlash from party members, before being restored by Saturday morning.

Upon the restoration of his Facebook page, Akhilesh Yadav shared a quote from the socialist leader Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan: “My importance from the whole revolution is to see the most suppressed person of society at the summit of power,” coinciding with the commemoration of Narayan’s birth anniversary.

The Samajwadi Party accused the BJP-led government of instigating the suspension of Yadav’s Facebook page, which has over eight million followers. Sources indicated that the suspension was linked to the posting of what was described as a “violent sexual post.”

The suspension occurred around 6 p.m., as reported by PTI. SP spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chaand condemned the move, calling it “an attack on democracy” and suggested that the BJP government was enforcing an “undeclared emergency” to silence opposition.

SP national secretary Rajeev Rai characterized the action as “a blow to India’s democratic system,” asserting, “If this has been done at the behest of the ruling party, it is a sign of cowardice.”

SP MLA Pooja Shukla also criticized Facebook for the suspension, remarking that the platform acted “without warning or notice” and stressed that “Facebook must remember its boundaries; it cannot silence democracy.”

In response, sources within the BJP denied any involvement, stating that the suspension was a decision made by Meta, Facebook’s parent company.

Akhilesh Yadav, a former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, has faced various alleged governmental actions in recent months, often portrayed by the SP as politically motivated crackdowns intended to suppress opposition ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh elections.
