Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, stated on Monday that the exploration of critical minerals in Northeast India is a primary focus for the government. This announcement was made during the inauguration of the Namchik-Namphuk Coal Mine located in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh.
During the event, Reddy emphasized the government’s commitment to developing the Northeast across various sectors. He noted ongoing coal-based activities in Assam and indicated plans to intensify exploration efforts in Mizoram and other neighboring states in the future.
Reddy highlighted that significant reserves of critical minerals also exist in bordering countries, indicating that regions close to these areas might similarly possess valuable coal and mineral deposits. “Exploring these reserves, developing the region, providing employment to the local population, and boosting economic activity is our main agenda,” he remarked.
The exploration project, being undertaken by the Mahalaxmi Group, is projected to generate approximately ₹4,500 crore in revenue for the Arunachal Pradesh government, as stated by Reddy during a joint media briefing with Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu.
In discussing the potential impact of critical minerals, Reddy noted their essential role in economic development, national security, and advanced technologies, while also cautioning about supply chain risks associated with their limited geographical availability.
Reddy described the inauguration as heralding a “new era of trust, transparency, and transformation” within the region’s mining sector. He emphasized that this initiative symbolizes a commitment to sustainable and legal mining practices.
Chief Minister Khandu reiterated that the project would drive industrial growth and increase employment opportunities in the state. “This initiative will not only boost revenue but also facilitate skill development, improved infrastructure, and long-term job opportunities for our youth,” he asserted.
Originally allocated in 2003, the Namchik-Namphuk coal block, with estimated reserves of 1.5 crore tonnes, had seen delays due to various challenges. The project was revived following a transparent auction process in 2022, permitting private sector involvement and addressing the past hindrances.
The initiative aligns with the EAST philosophy—Empower, Act, Strengthen, Transform—which aims to guide developments in the Northeast. With this project, Arunachal Pradesh aims to become part of India’s coal industry, which is the second-largest producer globally, having surpassed a record production of 1 billion tonnes last year.
According to estimates from the coal ministry, the mine is expected to generate over ₹100 crore annually for the state, while also creating job opportunities and fostering prosperity for local youth.
