Sharjah: In a surprising turn of events, Nepal secured a historic victory against West Indies in their first T20I series against a full-member nation at the Sharjah Cricket Ground. While Nepal’s batting and bowling might not have dazzled, they capitalized on a disorganized performance from the West Indies to clinch the win.

Nepal managed to post a modest total of 148 runs, but it was an effort marked by resilience. After losing two early wickets for just 12 runs, Rohit Paudel and Kushal Malla steadied the innings, forming a crucial partnership of 58 runs. Captain Paudel contributed 38 runs, while Malla added 30. Batting at number five, Gulshan Jha played a vital role with an important 22 runs, all of which laid the foundation for Nepal’s eventual victory.

On the bowling front, Jason Holder was the standout performer for West Indies, taking four wickets, while Navin Bidaisee secured three. Captain Akeal Hosein also delivered an economical performance.

The West Indies’ response to the chase was fraught with struggles, as several senior players, including Gudakesh Motie, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, and Romario Shepherd, were rested to manage their workload. Shimron Hetmyer chose not to participate, creating opportunities for players like Ackeem Auguste, Jewel Andrew, and Keacy Carty, who ultimately failed to capitalize.

Wickets fell consistently for the West Indies, resulting in a 19-run defeat at the hands of Nepal. Kushal Bhurtel was particularly effective among Nepal’s bowlers, claiming two wickets for just 17 runs in four overs. This defeat is a cause for concern for the West Indies as they prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup in less than six months.

Head coach Daren Sammy has expressed his desire for improvement in the team’s standards, yet it appears the players are struggling to deliver the required performances on the international stage.
