Assam Congress Alleges BJP Misuse of AI Videos Against Leaders and Muslims

The Assam Congress lodged a complaint against the state BJP following the dissemination of an AI-generated video that targeted Congress leaders and portrayed the Muslim community as illegal immigrants seizing government land. The complaint was submitted at the Dispur Police Station on Thursday.

According to the Assam Congress, the video, titled “Assam without BJP,” shared on social media on September 15, allegedly spreads communal hatred. Bedabrata Bora, chairman of the Congress Media Department, asserted that the video distorts the demographic reality of Assam, showcasing images suggesting an overwhelming Muslim population, public sales of legalized beef, rebranded landmarks with Islamic motifs, and unsubstantiated claims of Sharia-like laws.

Bora’s complaint names prominent figures within the BJP, including state president Dilip Saikia and BJP social media cell co-convenor Shekharjyoti Baishya, along with unidentified associates linked to the party’s social media operations in Assam. The complaint alleges criminal conspiracy, incitement to communal disturbances, and violations of the Model Code of Conduct during the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections.

Gaurav Gogoi, president of Assam PCC, and senior leaders from the APCC also filed a complaint with the Assam State Election Commission regarding the content. Bora stated that the video included distorted visuals of Gaurav Gogoi and Rahul Gandhi speaking, set against a backdrop featuring a Pakistani flag, and concluded with a warning to “choose your vote carefully,” implying an intent to sway voters.

Bora highlighted that the party had previously faced similar incidents, citing a related video shared by the BJP on September 12. He called for a forensic analysis of the video, the seizure of equipment from the BJP’s social media team, and swift action to remove the content under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Police confirmed the receipt of the complaint and stated that they would review it before determining further steps. The Assam BJP continued to post content claiming that illegal immigration poses a threat to the state.

In response to the controversy, Gogoi dismissed the BJP’s narrative, asserting that the party’s portrayal lacks credibility among the Assamese people. He emphasized the cultural values of Assam, referencing historical figures such as Srimanta Sankardeva and Bhupen Hazarika, and articulated a vision for a prosperous Assam founded on respect and hard work, rather than hatred.
