Bangladesh Secures T20I Victory Against Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2025

New Delhi: Bangladesh achieved a significant milestone by securing their first T20I victory against Afghanistan on foreign soil, winning by eight runs in the Asia Cup 2025 on Tuesday, September 16, at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. The win helped the Bangla Tigers remain in contention for a spot in the Super Four.

Nasum Ahmed was instrumental with the ball, claiming a wicket with his first delivery by dismissing Sediqullah Atal for a golden duck. The Bangladesh spinners consistently pressured the Afghanistan batters throughout their innings. Alongside Nasum, Rishad Hossain contributed with crucial wickets, making it difficult for the Afghanistan side to score as the pitch slowed down.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz managed to score 35 runs off 31 balls, but the batting struggled to generate the necessary momentum. Azmatullah Omarzai provided a brief flicker of hope for Afghanistan with a quick 30 runs off 16 balls, but his dismissal marked a significant setback for the team. Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan added 20 runs from 11 balls, including a six and a four, but he was caught in the 19th over, sealing the outcome in favor of Bangladesh.

Earlier, Bangladesh posted a total of 154/5 after opting to bat first, driven by a strong half-century from Tanzid Hasan, who registered his seventh fifty in T20Is. Bangladesh started positively, scoring 87 runs for the loss of one wicket in the first ten overs. However, they managed only 67 runs while losing four wickets in the latter half of their innings.

As a result, Group B remains competitive, with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh both accumulating four points each, while Afghanistan has two points and still has another match to play.
