Hochul Backs Zohran Mamdani for Mayor Amid Rising Poll Numbers

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has endorsed Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for mayor, in the upcoming November election. In her op-ed published in The New York Times, Hochul noted that her decision followed “frank conversations” with Mamdani, who has garnered substantial support from the party’s voters, winning 56.4 percent in the primary election. She emphasized Mamdani’s commitment to making New York City more affordable and ensuring safe neighborhoods for families. Despite Mamdani’s significant lead in recent polls, some prominent Democrats, including US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have hesitated to endorse him. Mamdani is campaigning on progressive platforms, including proposals for free public transportation and rent freezes for subsidized tenants, while continuing to gain support from notable progressive figures.
