Instagram/X/Eventbrite: Social media platforms are excellent resources for discovering online and in-person film screenings organized by local groups as well as major studios. By following prominent film studios, neighborhood theaters, and radio stations, you can gain an advantage over others. Although you may need to navigate through a vast selection of free events to find ones that catch your interest, there are often hidden treasures just waiting to be uncovered. You can look up specific films by name or search phrases like “free screenings in Montana” to unearth viewings nearby.
Movie Screenings (Facebook Group): This open Facebook group consists of members from all over the United States who share promotional codes, useful links, and strategies.
Saturday Night Live Reservations: Reigning supreme among all shows, SNL continues to thrive in its prime. The program holds an annual sweepstakes in August where hopeful attendees submit their email addresses for a chance to win free passes to particular episodes. Additionally, the website features a weekly lottery for standby tickets. Each Thursday at 10:00 am, the SNL team releases tickets for that weekend’s dress rehearsals and live performances. The competition is fierce, and seats are snatched up quickly, faster than the time it takes to go from the 30 Rock lobby to Studio 8H via elevator.
Warner Bros. Studios: The studio’s official site allows users to enter promotional codes shared through various channels—be it from the studio itself, movie theaters, local TV and radio stations, or through AdvanceScreenings.com—to redeem free ticket vouchers for a selection of WB television and film offerings.
Helpful Hints
Be persistent and prompt. Most ticketing services work on a first-come, first-served basis, so it’s advisable to apply for admission at the earliest opportunity. Set up alerts and frequently check for new releases—particularly on AdvanceScreenings.com. Once you secure your free ticket, arrive at the venue early. Events are often overbooked by promoters to guarantee a full house, so ensure you don’t get stuck at the end of the line.
Flexibility is beneficial. High-demand shows and films fill up fast. If you’re adaptable and willing to explore less popular events, your chances of landing a spot will significantly improve.
Some waiting is to be expected. After gaining entry, be prepared for potential delays in production. For highly sought-after events, arriving several hours ahead of time is crucial. Prepare by packing snacks and wearing comfortable footwear.
Understand the etiquette. Each event has specific rules regarding age limits, mobile device usage, and dress codes. Even if the invitation doesn’t explicitly provide guidance, dressing well (business casual) can enhance your experience. This could potentially earn you a better seat during a TV taping.
Treat the event staff kindly. These individuals put in significant effort to ensure you have the best experience possible, so it’s important to follow their instructions and make their jobs easier. Today’s ticket checker might be tomorrow’s decision-maker who can offer you VIP seating.
The Ultimate Challenge: Saturday Night Live Standby Tickets
For the true enthusiasts, obtaining SNL standby tickets is a test of endurance. At 10:00 am every Thursday, fans swarm the NBC website in hopes of securing seats for the Saturday evening dress rehearsal and the 11:30 pm live performance. Interested fans enter their contact information and are assigned a numeric position in line. Those hoping to attend the dress rehearsal will start lining up on 50th between Fifth & Sixth Avenues at 6:00 pm on Friday. (For the live performance, we lined up at 49th Street & Sixth Avenue.) By 7:00 pm, the current queue is counted to establish a permanent numeric order for ticketing. At precisely 12:01 am Saturday, numbered standby tickets are distributed. However, these are merely standby tickets, meaning your entry depends on how many ticketed guests actually show up.
After months of attempting, I was fortunate enough to be one of the approximately one hundred visitors assigned a number (#85) for the live show. On that Friday, I queued up six hours early, armed with ambivalence and a collapsible camping chair, uncertain if I would receive a physical ticket, or if I would endure the bitter cold of 30-degree December weather.
