The matter concerning the purported recovery of a large sum of money from the home of a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court was brought up in the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar promised to devise a method for a structured dialogue on this issue, as reported by PTI.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh brought the issue to light during the morning session, seeking the Chair’s input on the topic of judicial accountability and reminding him of a pending notice regarding the impeachment of a judge from the Allahabad High Court.

“This morning, we have come across a distressing report of vast amounts of cash discovered at the residence of a judge of the Delhi High Court,” Ramesh stated.

He also noted that previously, 50 members of Parliament had submitted a notice to the chairman concerning certain comments made by a judge of the Allahabad High Court.

Ramesh emphasized that the chairman himself has frequently underscored the need for judicial accountability.

The senior Congress representative also aimed to remind Dhankhar that he had directed the Leader of the House regarding this issue.

“I urge you to please provide some comments on this and instruct the government to put forth a proposal aimed at enhancing judicial accountability,” he added.

Regarding the alleged cash recovery, Dhankhar expressed his concern that the event took place but did not come to public notice in a timely manner.

He articulated that if such an incident had involved a politician, a bureaucrat, or a business tycoon, that individual would have immediately become a ‘target.’

“Thus, a systemic response that is transparent, accountable, and effective will undoubtedly be forthcoming,” he asserted.

The chairman further mentioned that he would confer with the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition to establish a mechanism for a structured conversation during the session.

A leading lawyer expressed shock and distress on Friday before the Delhi High Court regarding the alleged discovery of significant cash from the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma, who did not hold court today.

The Supreme Court Collegium has reportedly agreed to transfer Justice Varma back to his original Allahabad High Court due to allegations concerning the recovery of a significant amount of cash from his residence.

On the topic of impeachment, the chairman revealed that he has received a request from 55 members of the Rajya Sabha. Dhankhar further stated that he has undertaken all necessary actions to verify the signatories to the request.

“The majority of members responded positively, aiding me in fulfilling my responsibility,” he remarked and urged the remaining members to respond to the emails they received.

Dhankhar further noted that if the total number of signatories exceeds 50, he will take appropriate steps accordingly.

A systemic response that is transparent, accountable, and effective will undoubtedly be forthcoming.

“As a result, most members have been cooperative. Those members who have yet to do so, should please respond to the second email sent to them. Consequently, the process will not be delayed at my end for even a moment,” he said.
