Suresh Gopi Sparks Controversy with Statement on Tribal Affairs Leadership

Suresh Gopi, the Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, stirred controversy during a BJP election rally in New Delhi by suggesting that the Ministry of Tribal Affairs should be led by “upper castes” to guarantee true progress in tribal welfare. While addressing the gathering, Gopi asserted that leadership from upper-caste individuals, including Brahmins or Naidus, is crucial for tackling issues faced by the community. Following significant criticism, the Union Minister later retracted his statement.

“It is a misfortune for our nation that only someone from the tribal community can hold the position of minister for tribal affairs,” remarked BJP leader Suresh Gopi, who also oversees the Tourism portfolio.

“I envision and anticipate that a non-tribal individual should take on the ministerial role for their welfare. Let a Brahmin or a Naidu take leadership—there would be a notable transformation. Similarly, someone should be appointed to cater to the needs of forward communities.”

“This transition is essential within our democratic framework,” Gopi articulated further.

Expressing his aspiration to manage the tribal affairs ministry, the BJP MP from Thrissur mentioned that he has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to assign him the portfolio. “Nonetheless, there are certain traditions regarding portfolio distributions,” he added.

At present, the Tribal Affairs ministry is under the purview of BJP leader Jual Oram, a notable figure from Odisha, in the Modi-led cabinet.

Suresh Gopi Retracts Comments

The remarks made by Suresh Gopi triggered extensive backlash throughout Kerala. Subsequently, the BJP leader stated his intention to withdraw the comments.

“I spoke from a place of sincerity. My aim was to eliminate caste discrimination in ministry assignments. I am affiliated with a political party that appointed a woman from a tribal background as President of India. I also urged for a minister from a lower caste to oversee the progress of forward communities,” explained Suresh Gopi as he defended his statements.

Reactions to Suresh Gopi’s Remarks

CPI state secretary Benoy Viswam criticized Suresh Gopi, labeling him a “piper of the chaturvarna” (caste system) and called for his dismissal from the Union ministry.

Notable tribal leader C K Janu also vehemently denounced Gopi’s comments, describing them as “low-class” and indicative of his lack of comprehension.
