Mitchell Starc Reaches Milestone of 700 International Wickets

In a remarkable achievement marking both personal and professional significance, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc reached a monumental milestone of 700 international wickets on his 35th birthday. This stellar performance featured the clutch wicket of Sri Lankan opener Dimuth Karunaratne during a Test match in Galle, propelling Starc into a selective group of elite cricketers.

Starc’s Career Statistics

Starc’s impressive tally comprises:

• Test Matches: 376 wickets
• One Day Internationals (ODIs): 244 wickets
• Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is): 79 wickets

With this accomplishment, Starc joins the ranks of the legendary bowlers in Australian cricket history. He becomes the fourth Australian to achieve this feat, following the iconic trio of Shane Warne (1001 wickets), Glenn McGrath (949 wickets), and Brett Lee (718 wickets). Remarkably, only Shakib Al Hasan stands alongside him as the second active cricketer with 700 international wickets, while notable Indian cricketer Ravindra Jadeja trails behind with 597 wickets.

Australia’s Dominance in Sri Lanka

Starc’s feat comes amid a forceful display by the Australian team in their ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka, particularly in the first Test held at Galle International Cricket Stadium. Australia’s batting prowess was on full display as they posted a staggering 654 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their first innings.

Noteworthy Performances

Usman Khawaja stepped into the spotlight after a lackluster outing in the preceding series against India by scoring a magnificent 232 runs. Partnering him, Travis Head contributed a brisk 57 runs off just 40 balls, ensuring a blistering start for the Australian innings.

Australian captain Steve Smith, already in formidable form, built on his recent success by scoring a century against Sri Lanka, further establishing his prowess in subcontinental conditions. Newcomer Josh Inglis also showcased his talent, scoring a memorable 102 runs, making headlines by recording the second-fastest century by an Australian on Test debut.

Sri Lanka’s Struggles

In stark contrast, Sri Lanka faced difficulties with both bat and ball. The Lankan bowlers struggled against the cohesive Australian batting lineup, lacking sufficient strategies to counter the visiting team’s disciplined approach. The catching and bowling in the early stages let them down, resulting in significant pressure on the team.

With an early collapse, losing three wickets for just 30 runs, the Sri Lankans find themselves cornered and will need exceptional performances in the coming sessions to mount a comeback.

Conclusion

Mitchell Starc’s 700-wicket milestone is not just a personal triumph but also signifies Australia’s robust cricketing legacy. As the team marches on in the Test series against Sri Lanka, eyes will remain keenly fixed on Starc’s performance and Australia’s ability to dominate in overseas conditions. With the current trajectory, both the cricketer and his team are poised for exceptional success, celebrating past achievements while aiming for future victories.

The cricketing world continues to watch as these narratives unfold, showcasing talent, hard work, and the undeniable spirit of international cricket.
