Volvo, a renowned automaker known for its safety features, has launched its new compact electric SUV, the EX30. Initially announced in 2023, the EX30 aims to provide an affordable electric vehicle (EV) option as it enters the US market. The EX30 is strategically positioned to attract budget-minded consumers in a segment typically dominated by expensive luxury EVs.

Unfortunately, production delays and tariffs have increased its price. Below are the latest details regarding the EX30’s features, pricing, and what might appeal to Indian buyers in this new EV model.

Reasons for the Delay of the Volvo EX30

When the Volvo EX30 was first introduced in 2023, its base price was set at USD 34,950 (around Rs 28.8 lakh). However, US tariffs on vehicles produced in China caused delays, prompting Volvo to consider relocating production to Belgium.

This strategic shift has led to a rise in the EX30’s final pricing as it approaches its 2025 launch.

Updated Pricing and Trims

Volvo has announced the pricing for its most sought-after model, the EX30 Twin Motor Performance, featuring an impressive 422 horsepower engine.

  • Plus Equipment Package: Starting at USD 44,900 (approximately Rs. 37 lakh)
  • Ultra Equipment Package: Starting at USD 46,600 (approximately Rs. 38.4 lakh)

The starting price for the initial base model is still set at USD 34,950 (around Rs. 30 lakh), but its confirmation is pending, leaving potential buyers eagerly awaiting a more budget-friendly version.

A Favorite in Europe, Coming Soon to the US

The Volvo EX30 has already made waves in Europe, with sales exceeding 100,000 units, only second to the Tesla Model Y as of August 2024.

Its compact design, stylish aesthetics, and competitive pricing have resonated well with European consumers, and Volvo is hopeful for a similar response from the US market.

Volvo’s EV Lineup and Pricing Comparison

Besides the EX30, Volvo offers two additional EVs in the US market:

  • EX40 (Mid-sized SUV): Starting at USD 52,500 (about Rs. 43.3 lakh) for the single-motor variant, going up to USD 60,750 (around Rs. 50.1 lakh) for the top trim.
  • EX90 (Full-sized SUV): Starting at USD 79,995 (approximately Rs. 65.9 lakh) and reaching up to USD 89,845 (around Rs. 74 lakh).

Please note that these prices do not include delivery charges, which add at least USD 1,000 (approximately Rs. 83,000).

What’s Next for the Volvo EX30?

Given the current political landscape in the US, characterized by reduced incentives and heightened tariffs, Volvo is navigating challenges to maintain competitive pricing for the EX30.

However, its successful track record in Europe, combined with appealing specifications, positions the EX30 as an attractive choice for EV buyers in the US once it becomes readily available.
