Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the foundation stone for the NTPC Green Energy’s (NGEL) green hydrogen hub project in Pudimadaka, located near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, on Wednesday.

This initiative marks the first green hydrogen hub established under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The NGEL Green Hydrogen Hub project represents a significant investment of approximately ₹1,85,000 crore.

The project is designed to include the development of 20 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity, positioning it as one of India’s largest integrated facilities for green hydrogen production. It aims to produce 1,500 tonnes per day (TPD) of green hydrogen along with 7,500 TPD of green hydrogen derivatives, which include green methanol, green urea, and sustainable aviation fuel, with a focus on catering to the export market.

Covering an area of 1,600 acres, the project will feature various components, including a manufacturing facility, a green chemical zone, a chemical storage terminal, port infrastructure, a transmission corridor, a 7 GW substation, an 80 million liters per day (MLD) desalination plant, and an effluent treatment plant. This comprehensive operational framework is expected to be completed by 2032.

The establishment of this project is anticipated to generate over 57,000 job opportunities, thereby providing a significant boost to the local economy and enhancing the state’s position in the global green energy sector. Additionally, it will make a considerable contribution towards achieving India’s non-fossil energy capacity target of 500 GW by 2030. Beyond facilitating India’s pursuit of energy self-sufficiency, the project will also aid in driving decarbonization in key sectors and fortifying the nation’s Net Zero commitments.
