Arvind Kejriwal’s TOTO-Trouble: Delhi Bungalow Drama Explained

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of spending crores of rupees on luxurious household items, including a high-tech toilet seat that went missing from the 6 Flagstaff Road bungalow where he lived for over nine years.

The BJP referenced an inventory reportedly prepared by the Public Works Department (PWD) before Kejriwal vacated the bungalow, and after his successor Atishi also left earlier this month.

The vast 21,000-square-foot residence boasted extravagant items such as 16 Sony Ultra Slim Smart 4K TVs costing a total of ₹64 lakh and motorized window curtains worth ₹4-6 crore. Additionally, there were luxurious recliner sofas valued at ₹10 lakh, as per the BJP’s inventory.

A notable item that was highlighted by BJP national IT department head Amit Malviya was the smart toilet seat, which was reportedly worth ₹10-12 lakh. The missing TOTO smart toilet seats were described as fully automatic, sensor-equipped with features like automatic open-close seat, heated seat, wireless remote deodorizer, and automatic flushing.

A TOTO smart toilet is an advanced toilet manufactured by the Japanese company Toto Ltd, offering features like heated water cleansing, sensor-activated flushing, temperature-controlled seats, air dryers, and deodorizers for enhanced comfort and hygiene.

Atishi, Kejriwal’s successor, responded to the allegations by stating that they do not require a bungalow and are more focused on serving the people of Delhi, even if it means working from the streets.

The BJP criticized the extravagance in the chief minister’s residence, emphasizing the need for modern amenities but condemning the wasteful spending of public funds on unnecessary luxury goods.

In addition to the alleged missing items, the inventory also listed other luxuries like an OSADA full body massage chair priced at ₹4 lakh, a Bose loudspeaker valued at ₹4.5 lakh, smart refrigerators with inbuilt TVs and AI vision screens, a steam oven, a microwave oven, and a built-in coffee machine, all adding to the extravagant collection of kitchen gadgets.

The BJP had previously raised concerns about irregularities in the reconstruction of the bungalow, dubbing it “Sheeshmahal” for its expensive interiors and household goods. An investigation was already underway regarding possible violations of rules in the renovation of the property.
