Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held discussions on ways to strengthen cooperation across various sectors during their bilateral talks in Kazan, Russia. Modi expressed India’s readiness to provide support for a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Taking to Twitter, Modi described the meeting with Putin as excellent, highlighting the deep-rooted bond between India and Russia. The focus of their talks was on enhancing bilateral partnership in diverse areas. The bilateral trade between the two countries reached a record of $65.7 billion in 2023-24, with Russia remaining India’s top crude oil supplier.

Modi’s visit to Russia, his second in the last three months, underscores the close coordination and strong trust between the two nations. He emphasized the significance of the BRICS forum, emphasizing the value India places on the cooperation within BRICS in addressing global developmental challenges, climate change, economic collaboration, and more.

Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Modi reiterated India’s stance on seeking a peaceful resolution, stressing the importance of prioritizing humanity. He mentioned India’s willingness to extend cooperation for peace and stability in the region.

Putin welcomed the opening of India’s new consulate in Kazan, noting the ongoing development of projects between the two countries. The expansion of the BRICS grouping with the inclusion of new members like Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE further enhances its inclusivity and global agenda.

Modi expressed his anticipation of meeting other leaders from BRICS during the summit. Discussions are ongoing regarding the membership of more than 30 countries, with decisions yet to be finalized on which countries will be admitted first.
