Team India captain Rohit Sharma is all set to lead the Men in Blue in the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand starting on October 16. Having led the Indian team effectively across all formats, Rohit is now aiming to guide the team to the World Test Championship final for the third time.

As India prepares for the Tests against New Zealand, they have a well-balanced team in all departments. While Mohammed Shami is still recovering from an injury and not part of the squad, the Indian team boasts three talented pacers in Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep. Additionally, India has named an all-pace attack in the reserves. Rohit Sharma emphasized the importance of strengthening the pace department alongside the batting unit, with an eye on the upcoming Test series against Australia at the end of the year.

“In terms of batting, we have plenty of options. We aim to mirror the same depth in our bowling department as well. We want to build a pool of talented bowlers so that we are not overly reliant on a few individuals. This approach ensures that we are prepared for any situation,” Rohit said ahead of the first Test against New Zealand.

Rohit highlighted that the inclusion of additional bowlers in the squad is to provide them with an opportunity in case the need arises. With injuries to key bowlers like Mohammed Shami and Yash Dayal, India has named Mayank Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, and Nitish Kumar Reddy as reserves.

“If the situation demands, these players should be ready to step up. They have showcased their skills in previous matches before being included in the squad. We are closely monitoring their progress and managing their workloads,” Rohit explained.

Rohit praised the players for demonstrating their abilities in a short period and mentioned the importance of evaluating their readiness for Test cricket. “Test cricket presents a different challenge compared to white-ball cricket. We want to assess their suitability for the longest format of the game and determine what they can contribute to the team,” he stated.

He emphasized the need to fast-track talented individuals for the betterment of Indian cricket. “At times, we may need to expedite the process of introducing players. This is essential for the growth of Indian cricket. Nitish and Harshit are both promising players who can provide stability in the future. Having them around and observing their mindset is beneficial for the team,” Rohit added.
