A 14-year-old boy was shot dead in Shahdara, East Delhi, after attempting to pick up currency notes thrown during a wedding procession on Saturday night. The accused, identified as Madan Gopal Tiwari, a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officer from Kanpur, was arrested following the incident.

Tiwari was attending the marriage of his paternal cousin when the shooting occurred. After being detained for questioning, he was charged with the crime.

A senior police officer involved in the investigation reported that Tiwari exhibited “some mental health issues” and had a history of anger-related struggles, as noted by the Indian Express.

The victim, Saahil, was returning home from his job at a local grocery store when he noticed a wedding procession moving towards a community center. Many of his friends joined the festivities, compelling him to stop as well. As guests began tossing money into the air, Saahil and other boys rushed to collect the notes from the ground. Witnesses stated that he was pulled by his collar and assaulted by a participant in the wedding.

“Some boys panicked and ran home. Saahil stayed back,” shared his brother-in-law, Tabrez Alam.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that when Saahil inquired about his supposed wrongdoing, the assailant became enraged and shot him in the head. Police reported that Tiwari was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Five minutes after the shooting, neighbors alerted Saahil’s family, who rushed him to Hedgewar Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.

“He was just coming home after work… the money and the celebrations tempted him,” stated his mother, Nisha, who also claimed that the notes thrown during the wedding were fake.

Saahil’s father, Sirajuddin Ansari, who has been incapacitated due to a paralytic attack, noted that his son worked to support the family. Earning ₹6,000 per month for 11-hour shifts, Saahil had previously dropped out of school.

“He wanted to give us a better life,” Nisha expressed, adding that he is survived by three brothers and three sisters. The family had migrated from Jharkhand in search of labor work.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about violence and mental health issues in society. The case remains under investigation.
