Samsung Electronics has introduced the Galaxy Z TriFold, a foldable smartphone boasting a dual-folding 10-inch display when fully opened. This innovation aims to provide a compact phone experience when folded while offering an expansive workspace when unfolded.

Hardware Features

The Galaxy Z TriFold measures just 3.9 millimeters at its thinnest point and weighs 309 grams. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite mobile platform tailored for Galaxy devices, supports up to 16 GB of RAM, and is available with either 512GB or 1TB of internal storage. The rear camera system includes a 200-megapixel wide camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens, while both cover and main screens feature front-facing cameras at 10 megapixels.

The device has a battery capacity of 5,600 mAh, distributed across three cells in the foldable panels, marking it as the largest battery yet in a Samsung foldable phone. It supports 45W wired fast charging and 15W wireless charging.

Software Features

When unfolded, the 10-inch main display allows for three side-by-side applications, enhancing multitasking capabilities. Professionals can manage documents, draft emails, and engage in video calls simultaneously, while creatives can sketch, edit, and refer to materials all on a single screen. Additionally, the large display provides an uninterrupted viewing experience for movies and videos. The phone supports Samsung DeX, enabling a desktop-like interface with multiple workspaces and compatibility with external monitors, keyboards, and mice.

Samsung has included AI functionalities such as Galaxy AI and Gemini Live, aiding in photo editing, multitasking, and contextual queries directly on the larger screen. For media consumption, a Dynamic 2X AMOLED cover screen with a 120Hz refresh rate delivers peak brightness of 2,600 nits on the cover and 1,600 nits on the main display.

Durability

The folding mechanism employs two hinges of differing sizes within a dual-rail structure, promoting smooth opening and closing. The main display features a reinforced overcoat on a shock-absorbing layer, designed to endure repeated folding. The frame is constructed from a titanium hinge housing and an aluminum alloy for enhanced rigidity, while the back panel is composed of a ceramic-glass fiber-reinforced polymer.

Concerns

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding this new form factor, concerns regarding durability persist. Given the reliance on hinge mechanisms and flexible displays, potential issues related to repair costs and fragility compared to traditional smartphones may arise. Furthermore, the weight and size of the phone may not appeal to all consumers.

The Galaxy Z TriFold is set to launch in Korea on December 12, 2025, with subsequent availability in markets including China, Taiwan, Singapore, the UAE, and the US. Samsung anticipates offering a six-month trial of Google AI Pro and a one-time 50% discount on display repairs for initial buyers. However, there has been no announcement regarding availability in India.
