Four officers from the Viveknagar police station in Bengaluru, including the station inspector, are under investigation following the death of a 25-year-old Dalit man named Darshan from Sonnenahalli in Koramangala. He was found dead on Wednesday after reportedly being beaten while in police custody.

Darshan’s mother, Adilakshmi, has filed a formal complaint accusing the police and the Unity Social Service Trust Rehabilitation Centre of illegal detention, assault, and negligence. According to her account, Darshan, who struggled with alcohol dependency, was taken into custody on November 12 after an altercation near his home where he allegedly brandished a machete.

Three days after his arrest, police reportedly facilitated his admission to a rehabilitation center in Adakamaranahalli. Adilakshmi claims that officers prevented her from visiting him and demanded ₹2,500 for his admission, despite her offering to take him to a de-addiction facility herself.

Adilakshmi alleged that police assured her Darshan was recovering; however, on Wednesday, she received a call stating he had developed breathing issues and died. “When we reached the center, he wasn’t there; we were told to go to the Nelamangala government hospital, where doctors informed us he was brought dead,” she reported, noting that his body showed injuries on his chest, back, arms, and legs.

Bengaluru District Superintendent of Police C.K. Baba indicated that, based on initial findings, the Madanayakanahalli police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) under several provisions, including BNS 103(1) (murder), BNS 127(3), and Section 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The FIR implicates the Viveknagar inspector, a police constable, and two other individuals. The case has subsequently been referred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further inquiry.

Adilakshmi expressed to reporters that her son was physically assaulted while in police custody and was unable to walk when he was transferred to the rehabilitation center. A supervisor at the rehab facility confirmed to the media that Darshan was admitted at the request of the Viveknagar police and that visible injuries were noted upon his arrival.
