Benchmark stock indices Sensex and Nifty closed nearly flat on Friday amid volatile trading, as investors remained cautious ahead of significant macroeconomic data expected later in the day.
The 30-share BSE Sensex dipped by 13.71 points, or 0.02 percent, finishing at 85,706.67. During the session, the index reached a high of 85,969.89 and a low of 85,577.82, moving nearly 392 points throughout the day.
Meanwhile, the 50-share NSE Nifty fell by 12.60 points, or 0.05 percent, to close at 26,202.95.
Both indices had previously surged to record highs in intra-day trading on Thursday but ended the day nearly unchanged due to profit-taking among investors in the latter half of the session.
Analysts attributed the market’s range-bound performance to ongoing foreign fund outflows and a largely subdued trend in global markets.
Among the laggards on the Sensex were Power Grid, Eternal, Bharti Airtel, Axis Bank, and Infosys. Conversely, notable gainers included Mahindra & Mahindra, Sun Pharma, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and State Bank of India.
