Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra addressed her first election rally in Begusarai for the Bihar Assembly polls, criticizing the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) governments both at the Union and state levels for engaging in divisive politics and promoting what she termed “fake nationalism” to garner votes.
Gandhi announced that the “countdown” had commenced for the removal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (United) coalition in Bihar, urging voters to hold the NDA accountable.
“They first divided people and even went to war, but when they failed to distract the public from real issues, they began stealing votes,” she stated, emphasizing the need for political change.
She denied the existence of a “double-engine government” in Bihar, asserting that all authority is concentrated in Delhi. “There is no double-engine government in Bihar—only a single engine, with everything controlled from Delhi. You are not being heard, and your Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, is not respected,” she told the audience.
Gandhi also criticized the BJP over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which she claimed resulted in the removal of 6.5 million voters in Bihar. “The NDA government has weakened people’s right to vote by conducting SIR, which deleted 65 lakh names. Removing voters from the rolls amounts to a violation of their rights,” she said.
Questioning the NDA’s campaign strategies, she remarked, “What do their top leaders talk about when they come here? They speak only about the past or boast of the next 20 years. They criticize Nehru ji and Indira ji but never discuss unemployment or migration.”
She highlighted the Congress Party’s historical contributions, stating, “Who set up the factories? Who established IITs and IIMs? It was the Congress and Nehru ji.”
Moreover, Gandhi alleged that the ruling alliance is attempting to “buy votes” with last-minute welfare schemes, specifically referencing a new initiative that offers women ₹10,000 ahead of elections. “I would urge my sisters—do not sell your votes. Take the money if you must, but do not vote for them in return,” she urged women voters.
Additionally, she accused the BJP of opposing the caste survey conducted in Bihar, a report that was published when the Congress was part of the governing coalition in the state.
