Coal India Ltd has reported a 9.8% year-on-year decline in production, totaling 56.4 million tonnes in October, highlighting ongoing challenges in operational performance due to subdued demand and post-monsoon conditions. The company’s coal offtake also decreased by 5.9%, reaching 58.3 million tonnes, according to provisional data released by Coal India on Saturday.

For the period from April to October 2025, cumulative production reached 385.3 million tonnes, down 4.5% compared to the same timeframe last year. Total offtake during this period fell by 2.4%, amounting to 415.3 million tonnes.

In a related development, Coal India has appointed Sanoj Kumar Jha as the interim Chairman-cum-Managing Director, effective November 1. This date coincides with the company’s foundation day, following the retirement of P M Prasad.

The overall challenges faced by the company reflect the broader difficulties in the coal sector amid fluctuating demand and environmental factors.
